MARCELLO LO GIUDICE

Marcello Lo Giudice

Marcello Lo Giudice (Italian, b.1955) is a contemporary colorist, ceramist, painter, and installation artist who lives and works in Milan, Paris, and Noto. Born in Taormina, Sicily, he attended the Academy of Fine Art in Venice, and studied geology at Bologna University. While at the academy, he studied under Italian artists such as Emilio Vedova (Italian, 1919–2006), Giuseppe Santomaso (Italian, 1907–1990), and Virgilio Guidi (Italian, 1892–1984). During his early career in the 1970s, Lo Giudice worked in the Conceptual style, using mixed media like wax, strawberries, and smoke. He developed his own style, incorporating his knowledge of geology, creating large organic terrestrial landscape paintings. Since 2003, Lo Giudice has worked on a series of totemsculptures, using mattresses that the artist empties, burns, and damages. After performing this demolition, he applies layers of bright color using pigments and enamels. These totems have become internationally popular and widely collected.
